To Travel Like My Mother

I definitely inherited the travel bug from my mother. From spending a summer in Nigeria as a teen to living on an Israeli kibbutz in her 20’s to immigrating to Canada later in her 20’s, my mother has always craved adventure. To Travel Like My Mother

Her need to challenge herself, explore and discover has always inspired me. So when at 19 I packed my bags and moved to England; it only made sense. As I travelled from there to Africa, Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe and more, my father was anxiety stricken but I always knew that my mum ‘got it.’

From my first months, my Mum had me on a plane flying back and forth from England and as my siblings and I grew up, she would single handedly fly three children to the UK, France, Spain and beyond. As a parent now I wonder how she did it and has still maintained her sanity. My Mother/Daughter Adventures

And travelling with my Mum did not mean all-inclusive and catered vacations. It meant farmhouses in the south of France or apartments in Menorca. She has always been a believer in creating our own experience in a destination and enjoying the place for what it was. My Mother/Daughter Adventures

I’ve always enjoyed my Mum. I’ve always thought she was ‘so cool’ and wanted to hang out with her. I’m sure my constant need to be around her was annoying, but the older I got, the more we saw eye to eye. As an adult and a now a mother, I feel like we can connect in a way that while is still a mother/daughter relationship, is also a friendship.

Although my mother and I have travelled together a great deal, it is always with the rest of our family. We all enjoy spending time together so if something sounds like a great adventure, we all go together.

***On our way to surprise Mum & Dad with a family trip to Jamaica

I watched the movie Snatched the other day, a hilarious movie about a mother/daughter vacation in Ecuador gone totally wrong (starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn).  They get kidnapped, lost in the amazon and may or may not kill a guy. I thought, ‘My mum and I could’ve totally handled all of this’ and I mentally added that trip to a list of places that we have always wanted to visit together…minus the being kidnapped part.

Over the years, we have carefully curated our ‘bucket list’; to date, here is the list of the exciting adventures that my mother and I would like to take: My Mother/Daughter Adventures

  • Go on an African safari
  • Skydive
  • Travel India
  • Go to the elephant sanctuary in Chang Mai, Thailand
  • Drive Route 66
  • Tour Italy and drink loads of Italian red wine
  • Visit every island in the Caribbean

While we plan these epic adventures, I asked my Mum what an ideal getaway looked like right now:

A place that allows us to do what we want. A resort or cottage where we can talk. Read. Go shopping together. I suppose a place where we can do things that we both like but also have time to sit and talk or just do nothing. A place we can just be. Together.

I like that, Mum. Let’s book it.
